Posture during ordinary daily activities

Dear Master Gudo Nishijima,

Thank you for your clear and precise explanation of the method for practicing Zazen.

Considering your theory about the direct effect of Zazen on the autonomic nervous system, what is your opinion on the best posture during ordinary daily activities, especially while sitting at a desk or at a computer?

Would it be beneficial to sit in the Lotus position, keeping the spine straight vertically, etc., for certain periods every day while working, in addition to regular Zazen practice?

Thank you and best wishes,
Chris Ferebee

Dear Chris Ferebee San and Franzzup San,

Thank you very much for your question.

By practicing Zazen everyday, we can keep our lower spine into straight situation even when we are walking or sitting on a chair, and so forth. And such kinds of daily natural behavior is very important.

Therefore it is important for us to keep our lower spine straight naturally even in the time other than practicing Zazen.
But it is not always necessary to take the regular lotus position in our daily life.

With best wishes

Gudo Wafu Nishijima
