married monk

Dear Nishijima Roshi,

I want to ask you about the married monk.

In other country, like India, China, Thailand, monk doesn't get married. But in Japan, Zen monks get married.

1. Can you explain me, why do some zen monks in Japan get married?
2. And how about the budhism's Vinaya, is it allowed for monk to get married?

Thank you for your informations.

Sincerely,

Isahito

Dear Isahito San,

Thank you very much for your important questions.

(your question) 1. Can you explain me, why do some zen monks in Japan get married?

(Gudo's answer) Before the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Japan had forbidden getting marriaged for Buddhist monks by law. But since then Japan has begun to permit getting marriaged for Buddhist monks by law. Therefore nowadays almost all Buddhist monks have got marriaged actually.

(your question) 2. And how about the budhism's Vinaya, is it allowed for monk to get married?

(Gudo's answer) Of course the Buddhist Vinaya does not permit for Buddhist monks to get marriaged, but I think that we should think about the problems much more widely relating with human criteria of morals fundamentally.
